On the morning of January 12, 2016, the 37th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the 4th Jingzhou Municipal People's Congress deliberated on the Proposal of the Jingzhou Municipal People's Government on Determining the City Trees and Flowers, determining bauhinia and ginkgo as Jingzhou's city trees and lotus and wintersweet as Jingzhou's city flowers.

According to results of a public selection and experts' review opinions, ginkgo and bauhinia were determined as Jingzhou's city trees and lotus and wintersweet as Jingzhou's city flowers.

According to Jingzhou's requirements for provincial forest city building and the arrangements of the 18th Executive Meeting of the Jingzhou Municipal People's Government in 2015, the city tree and flower selection started in late October 2015. 197,239 people cast votes. As a result, the top three voted candidate trees were ginkgo, osmanthus and weeping willow, and the top three voted candidate flowers were bauhinia, lotus and peach blossom.

Early before the merger of Jingzhou and Shashi in 1993, Shashi organized a city tree and flower selection. Magnolia gradiflora was selected as the city tree and Chinese rose as the city flower.
